What did people in the pacific islands wear before the Europeans came?

Answer #1

Not much, usually just bottoms, loin cloth for the dudes and skirts made from thin bark and leafy type stuff for the females. They were real big into tattoing tho

Answer #2

We did NOT wear coconut bras like hollywood likes to stereotype. And we didn’t walk around wearing rainbow leis and grass skirts all day dancing hula. yes, the men wore malo’s (loin cloth) and the women had skirts… It depends on your class really, the chiefs and “higher up” people had more selection when it came to clothing and what it was made out of… It depends on the culture/what specific islands. And yes, tattoos were big in a lot of cultures.

Answer #3

In my country people mostly dressed in garments made of woven harakeke or from harakeke fibres. This was mostly in the forms of piupui (similar to a kilt) and cloaks. Other cloaks were made from feathers, or other plant fibres
