Where can I go to help people this holiday?

Do you have a local soup kitchen? Something people often forget is like shelters for battered women or teen runaways or places like that. Hospitals and senior centers are a great place, there’s lots of lonely people who would love the company. Check if there’s any drives going on around you. Or just call up your local salvation army or non-profit organization and they will direct you to where you could be of help. Oh, and not to come off as patronizing, but that is really great…

Maybe buy a few things, but them in gift bags, and give them to the people at the homeless shelter. You could also fix gift bags for the kids at the hospital.

Depending on what kind of help you want to give, you can search for local places, like to help the eldery, kids, or simply by giving food to the places that collects them for less fortunate people. Also you can grab some old toys and give them away, some kid could use that for a wonderful present.

I live in a small town too, and it can be tough to find places to volunteer, but maybe some of these suggestions can help. You can help your local Salvation Army collect money in their containers at the grocery store, volunteer at your local food bank (collecting and/or distributing the food), help out at the local Angel Tree/Christmas Baskets program (a place where new, unwrapped toys are collecting for needy children) or perhaps your local animal shelter could use some extra help while their regular staff is on holidays (dog walking, playing with cats etc). Another good idea might be to call your local church and see if they have any families in need and you can always set up a fundraising drive for them. Wanting to help is the first step….so good for you for wanting to get involved!
