Why are some people so fatalistic?

I see so many people who just don’t care about their future. They think they can do whatever they want today because they will probably not live long anyway. They drink every other day, they eat only unhealthy foods, they smoke, they never exercise. There are people who I went to school with who started drinking at 13. And when I say that I mean they would drink a bottle of brandy every Friday night. Now they are 22 years old and already have problems like gout and some even have liver problems.

On the other hand, there are so many reasons to be healthy. My grandmother started skiing when she turned 60. At 70 she learned to ride a jet-ski. She went hiking up mountains into her late 70’s. She is now 87 and still goes on holiday every second weekend. My one friend’s grandmother did skydiving at 80. Why do people want such short lives?

This universe has its own rule. Those who are fatalistic are to give more space to those who mean to live longer. :)

I know I live life as I see fit, but I;m also concerned about my own well being to some extent. Yes, I drink (more often than I should sometimes) but I’m also in school, trying to figure out a decent future for myself. I do want to live a long life, despite my fear of growing old, and I’m sure most people who seem “fatalistic” aren’t actually sure of living a short life. They must see how much there is to live for past the age of thirty, they might just hide it, I used to. If there was a way to actuially tally it, I’m sure at least 80% of the people who try to come off as wanting to life a short life, actually come to terms with themselves after a certain point and live a happier life :D Sorry if that didn’t make a lot of sense.

This is a very good question. I think it has to do with society’s pressure put on living in the ‘now’. I mean, you could buy the latest TV and not have to pay for it for 4 years with all of these live-in-the-now deals. In our modern technology lives, you change cellphone every year, get a new computer every 18 months, everything is digital and at our disposal with the push of a button (more like the touch of a screen). We are leading disposable lives. Where nobody is encouraged to think of the future, because even 5 years into the future everything, life as we know it, will be different. Different clothes. Different car. Different apartment. Different circle of friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, microwave, TV, cellphone, laptop, gps… Everything is constantly being upgraded and handed to us on a plate. We no longer have to work for anything but money. Which, in turn, can buy anything we could possible dream of. We are no longer working in fields planting and harvesting crops for food to survive. Chopping wood for the fire so that our families don’t freeze to death overnight. We don’t build our own houses. HeII, most people don’t even do their own cleaning and laundry! We have been cushioned in this easy-peasy world where the hardest decisions some people make everyday is what shade of lipgloss goes best with my new dress, or should I have my bagel toasted or fresh? Nobody thinks of the future anymore because we have all been lead into this false reality where we are invincible. Everything is too easy. That’s just what I think.
