Do you believe people like psychopaths can truly change and become normal?

Is it something that is truly changeable or simply controlled? Will psychopaths always be psychopaths just suppressed?

Answer #1

I don’t think people change, can you change what you like? No… You can take pills, or avoid how you feel but it’ll come back no matter what.

Answer #2

I think they can adjust, but something will always be able to trigger it back.

Answer #3

No, not at all. Once a psycho always a psycho, they just get better at hiding it.

Answer #4

People like psychopaths, sociopaths etc. have a servere mental disorder that can never be cured. They can be treated and locked up for the safety of themselves and others but they can never be what we call “normal” again.

Answer #5

I believe people can change if they try and only if they want to if they don’t want to change then that is up to them you can’t make anyone change it is up to them.

Answer #6

Psychopathy is a mental disorder. They are unable to feel true sympathy and are very un-empathetic with “weaker” or, let’s say… more emotional people.

Therapies exist, but will only be able to make the person understand that they have a disorder. The aim of those therapies is to make them able to logically consider the emotional effects of their actions on others and to try to give them a sort of ethics that will make them avoid hurting other people. They will never be able to acquire empathy. Most psychopaths are quite intelligent and will be able to “calculate” the effects of their actions very accurately.

Yet, a lot of psychopaths get along reasonably well in life without therapy. If they get the right education, they can in fact be very successful business people. Their psychopathic behavior will make them able to be super-tough and merciless in business - which can be a great advantage if you lead a company or try to kick yourself up the career ladder - and they will in fact be admired and see it as an advantage. So many of them never see a necessity to get a therapy.

Criminal psychopaths are a minority among psychopaths. Yet psychopaths are more likely to become criminal than other people.

Answer #7

What she said. Sociopathy is basically having a lack of empathy. This appears to be something you either have or you don’t, after a certain age it is unlikely to develop. And you have to remember that it isn’t like psychosis when you say it’s something to be controlled or suppressed. The person is likely to continue with their behaviors, but not all behaviors are going to have them arrested.

Answer #8

There can be profound changes in normal people through rehabilitation, intensive therapy, or spiritual experiences.
