I’m very sorry to hear that you’ve been having this problem. You’re having what’s called stress incontinence. Like others have said here, this is actually very common. Most recent studies have suggested that 15-25% of all women under the age of 30 have this problem regularly. So you’re not alone! While it is more common after pregnancy, that is by no means a requirement, and it’s common even if you’ve never been pregnant.

You really should talk to your doctor about this. It’s curable in the vast majority of cases. The first line of treatment is Kegel exercises. These exercises strengthen the muscles of the pelvic floor that support the urethra and the bladder. They’re a little hard to describe, but ask your doctor to teach you. The basic idea is to try stopping your urine mid-stream while you’re on the toilet. When you figure out how to do that, you’ve isolated the muscles and the action you’re looking for. Then, you can tense those muscles repeatedly, holding for a couple of seconds each time, several times per day. There are also biofeedback systems that can help you identify these muscles if you have trouble mastering the Kegels.

If these things don’t work, you should ask to be referred to a urogynecologist. That’s a type of doctor who specializes in women’s incontinence issues. You might be referred to a physical therapist or pelvic rehabilitation specialist as well. If all else fails, surgery is an option, and it’s effective in at least 85% of cases, but it might be a good idea to hold off on that until after you’ve had children.

Answer #10

Sometimes I leak a little when I cough hard and I know my mom does also when she sneezes. I’ve also been told normally it happens after a few pregnancies, but I think I do because my bladder is so small. So it is easy for it to be full.

Lindsey’s advice on Kegelswill probably your best chance at success.
