In Australia, What is the difference between Part Time and Casual work. As a High School student, which would be most appropriate for me?

Agreed with cbear got all the basis covered.

With casual work, the employer can fire you anywhere from 1 hours notice to a day.. With Part-time work, you or the company by law need to give either parties either few days or weeks notice if you both planned to terminate your work contract.

You will find most companies in Oz will hire high school students on a causal basis as this gives them the opportunity to let you go if business is quiet.. During Christmas period and sales periods, you would be rostered to work full time hours on a casual pay if you wanted the extra hours…Part-timer staff your working hours and days are rostered and so any extra hours would be paid as OT.

As for yourself, if you have parents or brothers who can drop you off or collect you at your workplace, then casual work would be better, as any shifts after 6pm the business has to pay you penalty rate…Try retail or office work if possible as these can lead to permanent full time jobs.

I worked at Kmart as a cashier when I was 16 on a casual basis for Thursday nights trading and on the weekends was rostered to work from 9am to 5pm…I was offered a junior full-time position as an payroll admin assistant (entry level into office work) by a customer who used my cashier lane when I was 17… So if possible you should try to get work that involves customer service where you are interacting with customers.

Casual Work is what you are after, that is where you are not guaranteed specific hours each week, and you dont get any paid leave or allowances or anything. Most work for young people in shops and cafes and stuff like that are casual, it just means your hours are meant to be more flexible. Part time work is like having 21 hours per week, all the time and you also get paid time off and things like that, and you probably would have set days. Casual work also lets you get paid more on weekends and public holidays etc.

so a casual job would be your best bet, then you can do it after school and at weekends.

I’m in NZ but I’m pretty sure you want the casual. Part time involves a contract which doesn’t let you move work hours around. Casual is less devoted.
