What are parachute pants?

Answer #1

Haha I remember those. They were popular in a track suit style out fit in the 80s or early 90s I think. They were made from a light material that blocked the wind from getting to you and kept you quite warm. Great for fishing etc. They were really trendy at one stage and I proberbly even owned a pair myself lol. They looked like the material from a parachute. Mel x

Answer #2

Parachute pants are a style of trousers (pants) characterised by the use of ripstop nylon and / or extremely baggy cuts. In the original loose-fitting, extraneously zippered style of the early 80s ‘parachute’ refers to the pants’ synthetic nylon material. In the later 80s ‘parachute’ may refer to the extreme baggyness of the pant. They are typically worn as men’s wear and are often brightly colored. Parachute pants gained media attention in US culture in the 1980s as part of an increased cultural appropriation of breakdancing.
