Origination of Arial Font?

Why was Arial Font called arial? Who came up with the name, and what inspired them to use “that” particular word?

Answer #1

Arial was designed in 1982 by Robin Nicholas and Patricia Saunders for Monotype Typography, with Type Solutions Inc. holding copyright. The original name wasn’t Arial though, it was “Sonoran Sans Serif.”

It became “Arial” when Microsoft acquired the copyright and began including it with Windows.

Now, why Microsoft changed the name to Arial, I don’t know…we may have to ask Bill Gates for that.
