What can I do to help my older dog?

My golden is 11, and he’s not doing very well. It seems like we take him to the vet constantly lately-he was throwing all his food up, cysts started showing up on him, he developed cataracts, etc. We’ve been taking extra care of his coat, changed his diet to be healthier on him and have been helping him into the bed (he can’t do it anymore). I just wanted to know if there was anyone here who has a senior dog and some tips on how to take extra care of them? I’m just really worried about him. I just want to make sure he’s healthy and happy.

This may not be an option in your house, but getting a puppy, or a younger dog may help out your current dog. There have been several studies that show having a younger spirit around can bring back some of the energy the older dogs have lost. It wont cure him but it may bring back some life to him. Also, if your dog is on any kind of meds you should feed him a small amount of yougurt every day (like a childs serving. Yogurt helps prevent ulcers and things that can develop from the medication (and they LOVE it. Have you talked to your vet about asprin? We give our dogs Ascrpitin (a brand of coated asprin that is safe and low dose) it helps with their pain and stiffness. You should talk to your vet first though because it may not be safe with certain health conditions. You may also want to consider switching his bed to a dog bed. That way he does not have to climb up. It will make it easier on his joints. At 11 yrs old, chances are he has some good life left in him. Goldens can often live to be 13 or more! Keep him at a healthy weight, and make sure he is comfortable and thats usually about all you can do…

He is a very cute puppy btw!

My dog freckles was 11 and I was 12. I got her when I was 1 and she was my best friend, but as she got older she had health issues. She got a tomour but we got meds that were supposed to help her, they didn’t. We had to put her down. We just didn’t want her to suffer.

Answer #6

I’m really sorry, I know what that’s like. At least you did the right thing.

Thanks, your answer was very helpful. I took your advice and gave him a little yogurt with his medicine, he loved it :)
