Believe that god is an old man with a white beard?

Do christians and other people in general believe that god is an old man with a white beard? I see this image of god a lot as an old man with a white beard whenever I see things involving god or jesus’s father. this is usually how god is depicted. is this really the true view that christianity has of god? please give suggestions. thank you.

If you look at the God of Genesis, it is ‘elohiym’, plural of ‘elowahh’. It means ‘gods in the ordinary sense’; deities. Throughout the Bible is the message of a hierarchy, a chain of command. Whenever you have a chain of command, somebody is given orders, which flows down this ‘chain’ to the appropriate individual and questions and reports flow up the chain to a bigwig, the one who ultimately authorizes the orders.

In my extensive research I am not sure if the actual “God”, the Supreme Being, is an actual flesh and bone being or a Spirit. When I think along the lines of a Spirit my thought is that it may be a ‘collective moral code of behavior’, by those that ‘put us here’, similar to ‘the spirit of democracy’.

The reason for this uncertainty is that if it was a flesh and bone being, it could have wiped out the human race and started all over again. But it didn’t, instead it chose to make the best of one setback after another in an ever-worsening situation. For instance, the coupe de grace was when Jacob appropriated Esau’s birthright for a bowl of food (Gen 25: 30-30). Why couldn’t this have been overturned?

In Micah chapter 3, “[1]And I said: Hear, you heads of Jacob and rulers of the house of Israel! Is it not for you to know justice? – [2] you who hate the good and love the evil,…”

And, Malachi chapter 1, [1] The oracle of the word of the LORD to Israel by Mal’achi. [2] “I have loved you,” says the LORD. But you say, “How hast thou loved us?” “Is not Esau Jacob’s brother?” says the LORD. “Yet I have loved Jacob [3] but I have hated Esau;…”

It seems obvious to me that if Esau had retained his birthright, the story of the Bible would have been different.

So, what do I think God looks like? The supreme God I am not sure. The Gods that created the situation where Earth could be inhabited? I think they are similar in appearance to us, with very advanced technology compared to ours.

I personally beleive that God is to beautiful and powerful to be looked upon by mortal eyes in his natural state, but when H feels the need to confer or bestow advice upon mortals then he can portray himself however he chooses. Remember in the bible he portrayed himself as a burning bush so as to speak his will to men?

NO!! God is the holy spirit, a SPIRIT he doesnt look like a human and he doesnt look like a animal he doesnt look like anything hes like air I suppose, because hes all around you everywhere

Answer #4

God is a spirit and thats because of all his power and glory

Answer #5

I believe that God is Spirit, and so powerful and so holy that no one could look on him and live. If men fell prostrate in front of angels… I do not believe it would be possible to stand in front of God. When I think of him, I think of a force unknown to man, emanating from the throne. So full of power and love, to be beyond our wildest imaginations.

Answer #6

No, that’s just the way the people who invented the idea of God depicted him. The myth has evolved substantially since then.

Answer #7

Well I don’t know. No human has seen God since Jesus, and He was God in flesh. Um, I’ve always seen him as looking like Jesus, but with grey streaks in his beard, or not, and I believe Jesus looks middleeastern. I know, I’m not much help.

Answer #8

I’ve always thought of God in the same way. I think the white beard comes from the fact that hes wise, and wise people are often associated with being old and having a beard.
