No success in training my dog! I need help!

I have a miniature dacshund who I have owned since Jan 2008. I already had another miniature dacshund for eight months prior to that who was trained to go potty outside. The newest dog, Scout, came from a breeder and is the runt of the litter. My husband is having such a hard time finding consistency when it comes to potty training the dog to go outside. One week there will be no accidents, and then BAM! It’s like we have a dog with amnesia. My husband is at his wits end. He and I both are starting graduate school soon, and he has had it. I just want to know if anyone has had this problem in the past, of having two dogs, where one is trained and one is just not catching on, and if there is hope! We don’t show favoritism to the older dog. Scout is such an awesome dog otherwise. He is obedient in all other aspects except this very important one. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I really don’t want to have to give my dog away because of this, but it is a major problem for us.

Wow, this is a tough one. I had a boxer who had a thing for chewing my expensive shoes, peeing in the house, running away, you name it she was bad. But, she was the sweetest dog in the whole world and I adored her. Instead of giving her up I looked into a boarding school for her. It was expensive (about 1500.00) but I felt as her owner it was my fault she was being bad so I sent her there. She stayed there for a month and I didn’t get to see her for two weeks. when I went to see her she could go for walks without a leash, waited at door openings till she was told she could enter and sat and layed down for up to an hour without me saying a word. I thought about it and decided any dog hereafter is going to boarding school. Think about it, you have your dog for at least 10 years, you buy it toys and love it, how much is your sanity worth to have an awesome well behaved dog companion for that whole time.

Well, if he can go a week without going in the house, I think he’s caught on half-way at least…To help him avoid temptation, get some enzyme pet cleaner and really CLEAN where he goes. The smell (which they can smell, even when you cannot), triggers a place in their head, to pee or poop.

Really, with all puppies wonderful qualities, and already being half-way trained, ask hubby to just hang in there…to make sure he gets out more often to go, and to make sure he DOES go when he’s out…The pup sounds like he’s going to be a wonderful pet.

Some dogs really are simply slower at this than others, but he will do it!!
