How do you know if somebody is not a native speaker?

i mean how do you know if somebody is not a native speaker, because sometimes people talk to me in another language assuming that im from that country, before to say something and i can speak and understand english i dont know why this happen i feel very frustraded.

Answer #1

I can tell simply by the way they speak/write. I have never met anyone who I didnt know pretty quickly that english was not a native language. Unless it is a language you grew up with, you’re not going to speak like a native speaker. I live in miami, and people assume I speak spanish all the time. I dont see what the big deal is.

Answer #2

I studied linguistics for a bit and I have a really good ear for accents, even if they are really subtle.

Answer #3

I listen to the way they talk. I can tell different accents pretty quickly. I may not be able to tell you what country, but I can tell you if they are from this country or not. You just listen to the way they say certain words.
