How to tell them it's my music, not theirs?

my parents dont like the music I do. and they are very open about it. They will not leave me alown about A concert t-shirt I got of Marilyn Manson. I like his music, they will not let me listen to him until I am moved out of the house. If I put him on my ipod, they will take my ipod, delete the songs. How do I let them know It is MY taste in music, not theirs?

Just maybe they’re trying to look after your best interests - trying to keep you from influences that aren’t good and may send you in a downward spiral in life…maybe

Hi - Your folks are possibly thinking that they are doing the right thing. They are probably frightned by his scary image and deep dark music, but being a Marylin Manson fan myself and also being a musician and also a parent, i can defo see past that. Musicians have always challanged the status quo and challanged the norm and thats not a bad thing, cos if we all liked and did the same things life would be very boring indeed. I think your parents arent the creative type or even free thinkers. I think that to delete songs are an invasion of your privacy and expression. Rockers are some of the nicest people going. All I ask is that you too see that Mr Manson is a talented musican but not a god. (yes a rock god, but not a proper god) always think for yourself. With regards to your parents, i would go easy on them, they are doing what they see is right for you and I’m afraid they are a bit ignorant of the media and the music world. Remind them of what is what that was unacceptable in their day, I hear Elvis was banned for a bit due to all that hip shaking! Then there was black sabbath and deep purple so you see it’s just life my sweet.

Some of the music is definitely not in the best interest of kids to listen to “kill this one” “stab that one” and so on and so forth. So it goes both ways. In some cases, music has been an influence as to why criminal activity has occurred. My daughter used to listen to certain artists and songs over and over and over. I hear them now on XM Channel 26 (My Favorite Channel!) and I pretty much know the words!
