My 5 robins

I have a nest with 5 baby robins on my porch I watch them from my deck. there seems to be a lot of pushing. is there anything I can do to ensure if one should fall thry won’t be injured. I have put a blanket down. is it normal for a robin to have 5 baby’s? If one falls should I just put her back?

Answer #1

No…but have fun “viewing” a close up of nature…The babies will probably be on the verge of flying when one finally falls out…

Answer #2

It’s normal for the babies to push their siblings out of the nest. It’s nature’s way.

I agree with phrannie and toadaly. You can watch, enjoy and learn, but you can’t control them. If you pick a fallen baby up it will smell of humans and probably won’t be re-accepted by its parents anyway. It’s quite possible that all of them will survive, but one of the hard things with nature is that parents have loads of babies so that if some of them die, it doesn’t matter so much.

We’ve been looking after tadpoles and if some die I get upset, but in fact most of ours survive, unlike in the wild, where most of them would die…

I’ve just been re-reading the book ‘My Family and Other Animals’ which is about a boy growing up to become a world-famous naturalist. It’s very funny but also worth reading to find out how he discovers facts of nature, as you are doing. It’s by Gerald Durrel.
