Musical Misogyny: Good or Great?

I’ve been listening to the complete works of ‘Led Zeppelin’ for the first time in ages. The casual misogyny in their songs struck me like it never did before. Much as I dislike misogyny on a personal level, using the subject as the centre of their music helped inspire killer guitar solos and devastating feedback. So now that we have had waves of terrible female singer songwriters (Katy Perry, Lily Allen, Katie Melua, Lady GaGA, James Blunt etc.) maybe a Musical Misogyny Music Festival (MMMF) should be formed? The end perhaps justifies the means kind of thing? What acts could play? And I was thinking that the stage could be set up Hugh Hefner style like the mansion with dancing bunnies in the background. Maybe he would finance it/ Wouldn’t it be great as a retro, postmodern event, a seminal event in many people lives? Men only, to actually critique chauvinism in an ironic way while having a forking good time? Any thoughts or suggestions? By the way, this baby is copyrighted so don’t try to steal the idea, my father’s a patents lawyer.

You need to go back to Led Zep 1 and follow the meticulous progression of the band’s misogyny. ‘Good times bad times’ will set you on your way, more of a self-loathing song but inexticably bound up with the speaker’s immature view of adult sexuality and his inner rage being projected on to the female subject. Very similar to much Renaissance poetry, such as Philip Sidney. I’m penning an article for Mojo ‘You wh*re! The music of led Zeppelin’ so look out for the full expose article. Yeah the rappers would have to be included because too many bands and musicians wouldn’t have the guts to come out as misogynists. It’s like being gay in Hollywood, career suicide. For instance, closely examine Coldplay’s lyrics as you’ll find they are really about Chris Martin’s insecurity and his hatred towards Gwyneth Paltrow because she used to be with Brad Pitt, and he feels he has to live up to that but can’t. Plain to see.

Hmmm. I’m not a huge Led Zeppelin fan, so I’ve never noticed it. What are some of the examples?

I love the idea of the MMMF. I’d go if I was allowed. Maybe I could apply for a dancing bunny gig. As for some additional acts at the MMMF, most male rappers fall under the category of misogynists.
