Should I confront my Mom about stealing money during taxes?

My mom claimed me on her taxes and she said that I owe the government money but I don’t even make enough- I should be getting money back. i talked to my sister who is an accountant and she agreed so did my boyfriend but its too late to do anything since she already got all her stuff back. I want to apply for a student loan so I can go to college but my mom is begging me not to do it. and I was going to keep it from her.. but should i tell her? and should i confront her about that I know she stole money from me… what should i tell her about that?

Dear antoninap, Did you fill out a tax return? I’m assuming you didn’t so if that is the case you owe nothing. If you are working…even just part time you must file a return. That is the only way to know if you owe money. If your mother is saying you owe because she filed a return and owes she is wrong. She would owe not you. Student loans are a must for some people and the only way they can go to college. So if you are serious about going and completing college then by all means take a student loan and always with the intent to pay it back. Sue…good luck

Your mom is probably in a higher tax bracket than you. She might have figured claiming you as a dependant would save her more money than it would cost you. In this case she should have talked it over with you and come up with a financial agreement.

Did you file taxes? Did you claim yourself as an exemption? If your mom paid less than 50% of your living expences than she shouldn’t have listed you as a dependant. If she did pay more than half of your expences than she really isn’t “stealing money” by claiming you as a dependant.

Be very cautious about getting a student loan. I know a few people who graduated from college with a large student loan and after a few deferments, missed payments, etc, now can’t get a good job find and don’t know if they will ever be able to pay it back. A lot of students are getting over their head with student loans. Personally I worked my way through college. it took me 12 years to get my bachelor’s but I didn’t have any debts hanging over my head when I finished.
