Is my money tree hopeless?
I bought a money tree about 4 weeks ago and it seems to be drooping and turning yellow in spots. I’ve tried direct and indirect sunlight. I haven’t over watered it, but nothing I do seems to help it. I even thought maybe by putting it outside for a little bit might cheer it up but nothing seems to help. I’ve recently heard that there pretty hard to keep alive once there brought home. What should I do to keep it alive and looking better and more perky?
Hi,
Money trees are acclimated to warm (not hot) and humid atmospheres, they are a tropical plant. You should water it regularly but also mist it with a bottle sprayer every day to stimulate humidity. If you are in a dry area, that is most likely the problem.
Perhaps this question will help you. There are some good comments.
:: MIRACLE GROW! One year into my 5 Money Trees (cantonese: faat3 choi4 sue6). 4th floor apt in a corner of the liv rm that gets about 2 hours of morning light. :: MIRACLE GROW [I always use 15 DROPS in a quart of TEPID water]. :: NO DIRECT SUNLIGHT: NO! NO! Young plants cannot take direct sunlight. Even in their natural environment they grow IN THE SHADOW of the big guys until their maturity lets them deal directly with sunlight. WATER: Never COLD .. Always TEPID-to-WARM. Water only when the soil is dry (3 days in cool weather .. daily in really hot weather) . Soak thoroughly. MUST HAVE GOOD DRAINAGE .. the plant will die if its roots just sit in water. MIST: Sorry, contrary to someone else’s advice, I was told NOT to mist more than once a week. They don’t like more. SOIL: I transplant as soon as I buy one. I use regular Potting Soil which I mix with lots of pearlite and or vermiculite and a bit of sand .. in order to provide good drainage (pebbles at the bottom, and a layer of charcoal to sweeten the bottom of the pot, then finally a COFFEE FILTER at the bottom before the pot’s hole in order to prevent soil erosion). TALK to them. The word “human” comes from latin HUMUS meaning “the earth”. So THEY’RE HUMAN, TOO! and we all need some TLC .. (At first, don’t let anyone see or hear you, except the plant .. that way the plant won’t think you are ashamed of it or something .. once you are into it, others will join in, and if you are very lucky, one of the braids just might whisper something back.) Whatever the joke, it has been shown that plants react favorably to cooing and talking .. and while some have posited a transcendental explanation for this phenomenon, others point simply to the CO2 which you are breathing onto the plants causing them to experience a mild get high. :: MIRACLE GROW. P-le-a-s-e. The simple liquid one. :: RE-POT every year in early spring into the next size pot 1” or 2” wider. .. if you can, get him a little friend to talk with when you are not around. Enjoy!
WHY IS MY MONEY TREE TURING YELLOW?AND THE LEAVES ARE FALLING OFF
Put your tree in a north window, if drooping make your self a cup of black tea, when cool put the tea bag in the plant and in no time your plant will come alive, I do it with all my plants, I had a beautiful fushia, she was drooping really bad, I thought poor thing looks doomed so I remembered my grandmothers method tea bag rememie, I did it and within the hour she was beautiful again, good luck to you,
Usually when the leaves turn yellow that means over watering. They do not need a lot of water, once every 7 to 10 days. Every couple of months water them with like a gallon of water to remove the salt in the soil. Make sure that they do not sit in water for this will surely kill them (root rot). If you do not want them to grow too tall repot them once every 1 1/2 in the next pot size. Keep dust off their leaves because this draws certain insects which are bad for them. Minimal on the plant food. No direct sunlight, but do make sure they get bright light. They are really a hardy plant.
