mistaken identity

Then why do people often make the mistake with identifying the correct nationality? Just because they speak spanish doesn’t mean they’re mexicans. Many people think that if you speak spanish you must be mexican. That’s is why I’m asking on how we can determine the difference and asking in a correct way without offending a person?

Answer #1

You’d have to know the culture pretty well to know the difference… the easiest way to avoid offending people is simply to not assume anything and to ask what their ethnic background is

Answer #2

I wanted to know what nationality my friend was cause some people thought vietnamese and some thought chinese and some thought mixed. I was tired of being confused and just came out and asked him. he’s full blooded chinese. just don’t ask it in a mean way. you’re curious right, shouldn’t be a problem just to ask.

Answer #3

Well, the types of spanish a person speaks can help separate the difference. But you would have to know the language pretty well…You could just ask them if they’re hispanic. Then they’ll probably just tell you exactly what nationality they are!
