I’ve been listening to metal for about 11 years now, and I think “traditional” metal bands are sort of dying out. Like the “big 4” of the 80’s: Megadeth, Slayer, Metallica (back when they were good) and Anthrax. Sure they still have the ability to sell out shows, but it’s mostly the old school diehards who sell out those shows.

I think with the rise of Myspace the metal genre on the whole has become a bit of a joke. Any band can tinker around on their instruments and call themselves metal now, and there’s going to be plenty of naieve kids who will buy into it as genuine metal- when it’s just unorganized noise. And not to point the finger at any bands in particular because that isn’t fair, but there’s a lot of bands on Myspace where you look at their comments and it’s a bunch of teenage girls and boys saying that insert such and such band name here is the heaviest thing they’ve ever heard. If they knew anything about metal, they would know that there’s bands out there that are a million times heavier and can blow that band out of the water. With the rise of “metalcore” and “nu-metal” I think the traditional heavy metal bands have gotten pushed aside. For example Slayer will never pack as much punch as they did back in the 80’s/90’s- and when the introduction to “South of Heaven” was actually intimidating. After “Diabolus…” they seemed to lose their edge, they have to keep up with the times, yet still find a way to maintain their core fanbase. Changing times are a double-edged sword for bands. On the whole though, it’s not dying, it’s just turning into a joke.
