Why does Merlin the TV show seem a bit cheesy to me?

The last epic fantasy series I watched was the Sword of Truth, which was incredibly well done. The filming style was more like “HDR” which shows richer, deeper colors and the sets were incredible….however, watching Merlin for only the second time last night I found it cheesy and two dimensional by comparison. The effects are OK, not incredible….maybe it’s just the directing style that I have a problem with?

Answer #1

I think it looks to “pretty” to be taken seriously. If that makes any sense at all. The clothing is more “costume” style. I have to agree that it is a bit cheesy.

Answer #2

Good point, I forgot about the dirt! Everything is FAR too clean to be entirely accurate.

Answer #3

Because it is “cheesy”. It is as far from Paganism as you could wish for in the acting side. Although I feel that is more to do with the production side of things. As they do get some facts correct is the witchcraft side of things. So the writers have done their research. My 9 year old loves it. Take it as it is meant. A light hearted cheesy , easy watch costume drama.
