Math questions?

The first math problem: In a race with 5 people, Betty finished ahead of David, and the same number of people finished before betty that finished after david. Adam finished before Charles, and Betty finished after Edward. Who finished in 3rd place?

John is twice as old as his son. In 42 years, the ratio of their ages will be 4:3. What is the son’s current age? (Can you also explain how I would figure that out please? Thanks!)

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you!

Answer #1

I think the race goes

Edward Betty Adam David Charles

that seems to work with all the rules.

Answer #2

John is twice as old as his son. In 42 years, the ratio of their ages will be 4:3. What is the son’s current age?

Let’s make John’s son x. And so that’ll make John 2x. 2x+42:x+42=4:3. Solve it as a proportion for your x value. =] You know, cross multiply 2x+42 and 3, and x+42 and 4. Then you should get your answer for x. Multiply x times 2 to get John’s age. Make sure you check your answer to see if it works. =]
