(Like Buddy Valastro if you may lol) For years now I've wanted to have my own bakery and make custom cakes, bake bread, sweets, etc, but I'm not sure what major/minor I should get..I looked on the International Art Institute of Chicago website and saw that there was a certificate to be a pastry chef...so if It's only a certificate, I'm not sure what I should for the major/minor or whatever lol. Please help? (:
Well... these thing depend on the courses available at different colleges and universities. Most colleges or chef schools only give a certificate or at best a diploma... I don't think you can get a degree for chef. If you aply for your course, you will be registered otomatically for the courses you have to major in. Unless they do something like what I'm studying, where you get to choose the courses you want to major in... But they give you a list of the courses you're allowed to choose and how much each course is credited and how much credits you need per year to get your certificate etc., etc. If you want to find these things out, go to the college or university website and find contact numbers and call them and start asking around. Each tertiary institution have their own way of doing things, so I don't know what you are going to need.
Hi - I'm a certified pastry chef. If you're applying to a culinary arts program, all the required courses will be included in your program, so you don't need to worry about which class to take. Your major would be "Baking and Pastry Arts". I don't imagine schooling will be significantly different in the US (I'm in Canada), but after you are done your program, you will need to do a 3 year apprenticeship and write your certification exam. As stated above, you don't get a "degree" for pastry chef, but that certification speaks volumes when you look for a job, or decide to start your own business.
