How can I learn German fast?

I’m going to visit my family in germany, but I am going by myself (and a friend my age), but my mom isn’t going because she has to be with my dad. She is 100% german and would have been my “translator”, but since she isn’t going, my friend and I are screwed. She taught me german for a while, ut she got a new job and she’s alwasy busy. My friend doesn’t know any german, and wont talk much because she doesn’t know my family. Is there anything I can use, but Rosetta Stone isn’t an option because I hear its like $500. I need to learn it by July :/

Wow, I actually went to Germany last summer with my friend. It was just the two of us going, and we stayed with her relatives. I knew how to speak absolutely nothing in German, and my friend new a couple words and phrases. It did get a little frustrating not knowing how to speak the language at times, so I think it’s a good idea that you’re starting to prepare! One thing I would definitely recommend is bringing a German dictionary. My friend and I studied some helpful phrases on the plane ride there. In the mean time, could you just ask your mom to teach you? Since your mom is 100% German, I’m assuming she can speak it. I think that would help you a lot. She could work with you everyday, and it would be completely free haha. Seems like the easiest thing to do. You could also try learning it online. Here’s a website: http://funadvice.com/r/15vkl75vfnd. I’m pretty sure it’s free, you just need to create an account.

If you have a good hunt online there should be many decent resources for learning German as it is one of the most popularly studied because of schools.

A German book is the way to go c; I Learned German from a game I’ve played, and this person helped me out a lot. Don’t trust Google translate as much ;) so I’d prefer a book.

use http://funadvice.com/r/15vlaj149dq and those videos http://funadvice.com/r/15vlaj14aib for pronunciation.

You can funmail me if you have questions. I’m German native speaker.

Tell your friend not to worry too much. 80% of all Germans speak at least some English. Tell him/her to learn Bitte (please) Danke (thanks) Hallo (Hello) Guten Morgen/Tag/Abend (good morning/day/evening) , Auf Wiedersehen (Good bye) and Wo ist die Toilette (Where’s the Bathroom). That should be suficcient to survive Germany. ;)
