Studying Latin

I’ve been considering studying Latin for a long time now, out of interest and a desire to understand our language, history and classical studies. But, is it worth my money to get the degree or should I just go odit the course? Has anyone taken Latin? Do you apply it in your life, or career? Most people laugh at me when I say it is what I want to start my education with.

It is a very good foundation when it comes to learning languages and understanding why certain words are spelled a certain way. When it comes to the university level, it all depends on what you are going to do with it. Are you planning on becoming a Latin teacher or professor? Or are you undecided when it comes to a major? If you are simply taking it for a language requirement, then go for it! As an English major, I wish I would have had the time to study it. It would have helped me a lot when it comes to understanding why words were spelled on way in 1066 and now another way in modern day 2008. When I realized I wanted to study English, people laughed at me too. However, this major has provided me with an outlet that no other major has provided me with, e.g. analytical skills. Th only other major or subject that has provided me with the a higher level of analytical skills are my philosophy classes. Take an intro class or level one language class to start with and see where you go from there. If you are still unsure, talk to your adviser and see what he or she says.
