What are laser-burned DVDs?

is it a fake DVD if it’s laser burned? what does a laser-burned DVD look like? is every DVD laser-bured?

Answer #1

Hi,

CDs that large companies make in large numbers are made in a factory with a pressing machine. The data is pressed onto the reflecting layer and then covered with the transparent plastic layer.

If you want to write a dvd, then you buy one with an even reflecting layer and burn non-reflecting dots into that layer with your dvd-writers laser.

Small companies however, who make programs or databases that sell in small numbers may burn their dvds in the same way, because they can’t afford a pressing machine. So the fact that the dvd is burned does not say anything about whether the program is genuine.

Ask for an original license (that is more important than the data carrier dvd) and don’t buy any popular movies, music by famous bands or products by large companies on “laser burned”. Especially not on ebay or similar places.

so, laser-bured isn’t genuine or original work?

Answer #3

If you buy a software or data/music/movies that should exist in large numbers, then laser-burned is probably not original. If you buy something with a small edition like… a database about native american traditional songs from a guy who teaches such songs in evening classes and who sells 30 of those per year then laser-burned is probably genuine.
