Laptop overheating

My laptop keeps overheating, how could I make it cooler and is it a bad thing?

Where is the fan located? Many laptops have the fan underneath it, so avoid putting it directly on a table or your lap.

I solved this problem with one of my laptops by using a bakers cooling rack and setting the laptop on it instead of the table - that way there was room for the air to circulate.
