How many languages does you country officially recognise?

We have 11 official languages, Afrikaans,English,Sepedi,Tswana,Venda,Xhosa,Zulu,Ndebele,Sotho, Swati,Tsonga. You guys?

Answer #1

German is the only official language here, but schoolchildren learn English from a very young age and may choose another elective language, such as French, Spanish, or Italian, later in school.

I went to school for a few years in the DDR, and Russian was mandatory. You could only study English as an elective language. Times have changed since reunification!

Answer #2

In india, our main languages are Hindi and English, and there are many more, there are 22 languages.

Answer #3

But aren’t there different variations of Hindi? I have friends who aren’t allowed to even date out of their sects

Answer #4

Reply to this…Yes,they all are made from hindi and you can call them variations too, though when I try to understand it’s not that easy for me and I can only understand Hindi, and I think Hindi is made from Sanskrit which is one of the indiands language.what do you mean by sects?date a guy?well same here if you are talking about this.

Answer #5

Wait, I’ve heard there are 27 official languages in India before…not 22? Some are more closely related than other languages…I think there are more than one set of alphabets, too, but I could be mistaken.

Answer #6

Funny thing about the USA is that many Americans assume English is our official language, but, we don’t have an official language…at least, the last time the debate came up, that was the case. It creates some problems (eg, the federal and state governments print a LOT of material in a number of languages, b/c everybody needs access to the material).

Where I’m living now (Maldives) the official language is Dhivehi, which is derived from Sanscrit and has heavy influence from Arabic as well as minor Portuguese influence…some words like “mezu” are close to the Spanish / Portuguese (mesa = table) others like Shukria are close to the Arabic (Shokran / thank you).

:) The script is closest to Arabic, flows right to left, but it’s a unique language and only spoke by 300K people…in many ways, you might consider it a “dead” language, similar to Hungarian, b/c due to technology, more and more people here speak 1 word out of 20 in English, rather than their native language and many modern things, there is no local language counterpart for the same term, so English words are used instead of inventing a new Dhivehi word.

Acc to wikipedia, we have 125-175 languages. I think there’s no official count because we have 7107 islands in the philippines and i dont think the language of each island has been tracked or if it has been, maybe there are some differences from each other.

Answer #15
