How do labels relate to self-fulfilling prophecy?

This is a difficult question to answer, because every person is different. Some get lifed up by labels, because they try to prove them wrong… Others get put down by them and thus you get the self-fulfilling prophecy. I really want to think that labels form my past has no influence on me today, but that is not true. Some have had positive influences on me, like when I was little kids called me dumb and I have always tried to prove them wrong. Today I’m studying at the university to become a psychologist, so I’m not too stupid if I’ve made it thus far… Yet, some days I feel like I’m just a failure and that I won’t make it no matter how hard I try, because I believe those labels and thus believe I’m stupid. Either way… That label still has an influence on me. Why is it so hard to believe the good things people say about you than the bad things? Its harder said than done.

General rule: What children learn to be and do is not what their parents tell them they should be and do, but rather what their parents (or others) tell them they already are and already do. Example: “Stop being so lazy and work harder!” doesn’t teach your child to work harder; it teaches them that they are lazy. That’s the starting point; only afterward does the child get to choose, as Suzaan said, between accepting or struggling against their own ascribed laziness. Either choice is based on the learned self-perception that they are, in fact, lazy.

This question goes very well with your other one about how building self-esteem in a child involves collaboration, not deception. You can’t shame a child into diligence; nor can you just tell them they are diligent if they are not. You have to work with them to build diligence, so they can see and take pride in their own accomplishment.
