Any laptop that works well will not be sold at $200 or under, used or otherwise. People selling laptops at that price will be selling you something that either has serious issues, or is already broken somehow.

If you’re hard up for cash, I’d honestly suggest you save up for a netbook. Netbooks are usually around $230, and I find they work pretty good. Not only do they have all things working, but at that price, they also have a warranty for you in case they break. This option, although it’s over your current limit by a little, will serve you far better. There’s no point in buying something cheap and crappy if you’ll only have to replace it shortly down the road. That’s a waste of your money.

Do you really need Word? There is a free alternative to MS Office called OpenOffice that comes with a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation manager, etc. all largely compatible with those in MS Office. With few exceptions OO can open MS documents, edit, and save them in MS formats.

I use MS Office at work and OpenOffice at home and I haven’t had any problems with OO.

A low end Netbook and OpenOffice is what I’d suggest for your budget.
