What is the best kind of dog to get?

Me and my mom just got a new house and we decided to get a dog. It would be a guard dog/House dog. But a dog that is also good with kids, I have a two year old niece. We want a bigger dog. One that’s easy to train ( I’ll be the one training it )

Any livestock guardian dog. http://funadvice.com/r/c0b28u751pk

They are large dogs, bred to be protective and mistrusting of strangers but not agressive towards their own “herd”.

Friends of mine have a Kangal dog. That dog is very sweet with their kids but it will not let any stranger enter the house unless my friend rigidly tells the dog to shut up and sit down.

As with every dog, you will have to make sure the dog knows that you are the boss. Those livestck guardian dogs are strong. If you let it think that the dog is the boss, then it will still protect you, but you will never be able to invite anynoe over.

And be warned: They eat tons of dog food. This is going to be expensive.

My favorite would be a Rhodesian Ridgeback but they can be temperamental and hard to train. English Mastiffs are probably the easiest big breed to train but tend to be gentle giants too trusting to be good guard dogs. Bullmastiff, rottweiler, doberman, and German shepards are all good choices if you can find a good one.

Labs are good with kids, easy to train and guard their home

German Shepherd or Husky :)

Answer #9

Go and get one from a shelter ! My dog is from a shelter and he is pure sweetness. He was abused as a puppy and it really feels good to make him part of the family but I would say don’t pick right away see which looks the best when you get them!

Golden Retrievers are very loyal dogs, not so sure they would be a good guard dog, the ones we have owned were nice to everyone. We have a black lab, and a Maremma sheepdog current and they are good. Keep the coyotes out of our farm yard, and such.

I have a cocker spaniel & he is absolutely adorable! He’s small, cute, and fun :) He doesn’t bite or play rough, he can sit in your lap, easy to travel with, and he is always waiting at the door when we come home to lick and love all over us. I just love my wittle sammy <3 You should get a cocker spaniel (:

Answer #12

It depends. I’m a great fan of bull mastiffs for large dogs. They are excellent with children, do well in smaller spaces, but also love a good walk. Plus they are not agressive to other dogs as a general rule (although I believe that it is the owners fault if a dog is aggressive). Also bassets are awesome, not that large, but mellow, fluffy and super social so excellent for children.

Answer #13

Get an American Eskimo dog. They are super friendly and just absolutely gorgeous!

Answer #14

All that have been mentioned here are good choices and some that weren’t as well. It really depends on what it is you all would prefer …some dogs require more attention, grooming, care then others, that’s what you decide upon what’s doable or not…But ultimately…it depends on the dog that selects you and your family. If you think the adoption process works differently…think again. If the dogs not happy and wants desperately to be with his keepers…..ain’t nobody that’s going to be happy…LOL
