Is this my right?

This morning, I was sleeping and someone else who lives in this house was already making noise and running around at 8:40 on a Saturday. I got upset and was wondering if I should be upset? Does he have a right to make noise that comes before my right to sleep? I always thought that whenever people are sleeping, common courtesy means you stay quiet! But maybe that is not the case?

Answer #1

Have you talked to this person? Because common courtesy or not, it is absolutely pointless being upset at a person when they probably werent out to disturb your sleep.

Answer #2

Legally, most noise by-laws allow people to make an acceptable amount of noise between the hours of 6AM to 11PM - so his right to make noise actually quashes your right to sleep later.

Morally, however, if he knows someone is asleep in the house, the polite thing to do would be to stay as quiet as possible.

Answer #3

it’s not your “right” but the “right” thing to do would be to talk to this person about it and tell them that you don’t like it, if they do it anyways or do it even more (which people like to do in my life after I tell them to stop) then it is your right to totally embarrass them for being like that, I hope that helps

Answer #4

Common courtesy…yes…a “right”…well, no.

Some people don’t look outside their own bubble. The fact that you are courteous, and practice what you preach, is about all the control you have on the situation. You can ask them to try and keep the noise down, but that doesn’t mean it will happen.
