Is all religion worthless?

solomon says all is worthless.what is your opinion about this?

Answer #1

Depends on how you value things.

Many people argue that religion gives some people peace and inspires them to live more thoughful and loving lives. Religion also gives people licnese to commit attrocities (Crusades, inquisitions, witch hunts, manifest destiny, women’s clinic bombings, etc).

Plato came up with the idea of the Noble Lie. Plato didn’t think ordinary people could be trusted to behave in their own and society’s best interest so he thought it was necessary to claim it was the will of the gods to get people to do the right thing.

Karl Marx said that religion was the opiate of the masses; he wasn’t commenting on the verasity of religion but rather the way religion was used to make people accept inequity; it is used to keep poor people in their place so they won’t rise up and demand a better life from their oppressers.

I know lots of people who are believers and several who aren’t. I can’t really see any difference. I don’t see religious folks being any happier or more virtuous than those who are not religious.

I see some value in the study of religion to understand humanity. Religion addresses our deepest needs, hopes, and fears. Studying religion we can better learn what it means to be human. The value of religion comes from its symbolilsm and metaphore rather than its literal claims.

I’ll take this from the other side. I presume ravireuben is speaking of Qoheleth or Ecclesiastes when he says all is worthless. Well, in that book, I found only two minor positive points: companionship (as in 4:10-12) and enjoying the moment (5:17-19). And yet, in 9:4, he says that life is better than death. So, there must be something in life that is worth living.

Part of Qoheleth’s outlook is the futility of it all. Death is the great answer to hope: no matter what you do or build, death marks an end, and even the greatest achievements will eventually be forgotten.

Well, Christianity has a greater answer to death. Jesus passed through death, showing us the way to eternal life. Death is no longer the end of the story, but only a temporary stop along the way. In God, who loves us as a father, we will not be forgotten, but will find life and joy. Nor will we be dead and gone forever, so that we, too, will remember and cherish ourselves and our lives, but also the lives and works of those we love.

No, I must say, religion is not worthless. In fact, faith in God and Jesus Christ is the one thing that tells us that life itself is not, in the end, worthless.

Answer #3

“solomon says all is worthless.what is your opinion about this?” Ecclesiastes, Actually if you read the book in whole you will find that in short he is saying every thing in life is meaningless except serving God.

Answer #4

What Solomon is saying is that,”all is vanity and grasping for the wind.” It means that unless you put Christ(God) first and yourself last everything you seek after will be void of meaning. Things only satisfy for a while then they are gone, riches, friends, possessions etc. A relationship with the Father is what’s imparaitve for happiness despite problems and challenges that may come your way. Many times throughout the book of Ecclesiastes beginning in Chapter 1 through Chapter 7 references are made to the folly of living for selfish gains and the differnce between true wisdom and self seeking pleasures.

Answer #5

well in the end nothing is really worth it …nothing can amount to the life of a person/animal and when you die you never take anything with you but yourself and your thoughts and everything really costs nothing..fights and wars are piontless and most of the time nothing really gets accomplished like weve seen in history…for one to kill another is pointless and its worthless saying anything because we’ll never learn…some will say that all is worthless because all they worked for tuned out to be for nothing in the end.

Answer #6

God is in the relationship business; not the religion business.

Answer #7

Religion has only as much worth as you personally give it. It helps to be a motivator and an inspiration for some, it keeps people’s negative actions in check if they believe in the consequences. For others, it is simply a burden.

Answer #8

Religion has no life, apart from relationship… One must know that God is alive…that his word works… that following him brings fulfillment.

Answer #9

One thing is for certain - when you die, you’ll find out if Hell or Heaven is real for yourself - I believe the Bible to be the truth - one either accepts or rejects.
