Iran, A true threat?

I’ve been looking at topics about Iran.

Personally, I’m hung up on the Iraq War. But it ISN’T because of Iran. And people are constantly telling me that Iran would invade Iraq if we left early and that Iran would disrupt Middle East peace and prosperity.

  1. I see no Middle East ‘prosperity’. There are kids getting shot up in Israel, there are people breaking through walls to reach Egypt, and Iraq is in Civil War.

  2. Iran would not dare invade Iraq for several key reasons: -The United States spent $583,283,000,000 in 2007 and Iran spent an estimated $6,300,000,000

-The U.N. would most likely intervene

-Iraq, while broken in unity, would put up some small fight of some kind until an allied force arrived, or until they were overrun.

-The European Union would impose sanctions on Iran

-Israel would enter a heightened state of awareness…(?)

As for reasons Iran would invade Iraq if we left, here are all I could think of.

  1. Abundant oil reserves that can still be easily repaired.

  2. Shia Islam is prevalent in Eastern Iraq, meaning they may sympathize with any foreign invader that is also Shia

  3. Many local countries admire the Iranian leadership for acting boldly against the West (although some condemn it as well).

Someone tell me just what would happen. Without giving me a dumb, politically charged statement calling me some “liberal” or “socialist” or even “communist”.

I assure you, I am not of any sort.

Well, Iran is definately militarily capable. Its Revolutionary Guard and ground forces, when combined, are three times as big as the current US military presence in Iraq. The IRanian military is also much better trained and equipped than the Iraqi one was at the time of the 2003 invasion. Iran is a definately a regional power.

Here’s the thing with Iran, though. The reason they are doing stuff like pushing for nukes, holding British sailors hostage, messing around in Iraq, and having their ships screw with US forces, is because they themselves feel threatened. Between Afghanistan, Iraq, the Persian Gulf, and Turkey, the US has Iran almost completely surrounded militarily. Iran perceives this as a threat to their security, and they are responding in kind. They’re basically circling their wagons.

It’s up to the US to diffuse this tension by engaging Iran diplomatically. I hope the next US president is willing to do this, otherwise, we will have a Cold War in the Middle East that a better chance of becoming hot.

The problem is, Iran’s military doctrine is a Human Wave. They almost beat Iraq in the 80’s-90’s because Iraq ran out of bullets.

The U.S. has enough ammo, some of the best military minds in the world, and 900,000 more troops if it came right down to the bone (highly doubtful). If Iran was going to consider a conventional war of actual fighting above the ground, America would decimate them with the Air Force, the Navy, and any kind of Special Ops.

Turkey couldn’t mount any kind of sizable offensive against the forces of Iran. Maybe they are heavily influenced by the U.S., but their Army couldn’t hold it’s own against the might of Iranian armor, or Iranian infantry.

The youth and rapidly changing culture are very pro-western. War would be the last thing that people want in Iran right now.

An attack from Iran against the U.S. and Iraq would result in international backlash. Iran is almost shunned by the rest of the world for their hatred of the West. I believe the U.K., Germany, France… Basically the entire G8 would retaliate.

I figured it was Yellow Journalism.

The thing is, while Iran IS hostile, it isn’t militarily capable…

Answer #4

Oh definitely.

People think Shia and Sunni will all get along. America comes in and expects a complete shutdown of all hatred between the two groups.

I just hate how everything is Biased towards the Right-wing.

Even MSNBC, a definite Left-Wing establishment, has turned John McCain into a hero.

Answer #5

Iran is NOT a theat. The US wants the public to believe this so they think that the government is justified with their actions toward new age imperialsim. The media overexaggerates the ‘threat of Iran to middle east peace’, therefore scaring the public into believing the government. Yellow Journalism. The government is herding the common people into fear so that the public think that ‘eliminating the threat of Iraq’ is right and even best for the world. The US just wants oil and army bases. America hates everyone who isn’t like them, like government, culture and religion. its ridiculous. and thats why most of the world hates the US and George Bush. Hes helping to cut up the middle east, and justifies his administration and his actions through the excuse of threats and fear so that the general public believe that the government is their shield to the nonexisting threat.

Answer #6

yeah thats true. but the middle east will never see peace. as long as people are corrupt with power and greed over oil, the holy lands ect. they will always be hostile. it isn’t new news. Its been this way for thousands of years. the only new thing is the government manipulating people’s emotions and mentality about their actions. Iran wouldn’t be a threat if we weren’t knocking on their door. The US believes their government will spark a domino theory of other countries. America should only intervene if the human rights of the civilians are being threatened, not the government in which the country decides to run by.

Answer #7

lol I know! that makes me so mad! I dont even watch american news channels anymore because they are just so biased. I get my stuff from bbc and reuters now. I hate how america has this mentality “Look at us! we’re peaceful! Watch us spread it!” and all we do is spread the bloodstains around the middle east even more. I really hope McCain doesn’t win! He’ll just continue the whole Bush plan and screw the world over even more. The country NEEDS a democrat.

Answer #8

Oh yeah BBC is just amazing.

And I think America needs a woman. I’d say, if McCain wins, I’ll leave the country when I’m 18.

Answer #9

I hope not..lol the world.is comming to nothing!!!
