You can “rip” any songs off of CDs you own. The vast majority of the songs on my iPod are from CDs I own. I’ve purchased a few from iTunes but since I generally want the CD as well just getting the CD seems like a better deal.

Of course downloading copyrighted material that you do not have license to use is illegal but we all knew that didn’t we? The record industry has been rather agressive suing illegal downloaders so keep this in mind.
