Hi,

Emancipation guidelines vary by state.

Your profile says you live in California, so I’ll assume that is correct.

In California, the age for majority is 18, which means you must file emancipation in order to become legally separated from your parents.

To become emancipated, you must file paperwork and then go to court. In court, you must prove that you are able to financially take care of yourself without your parents help (you must be able to pay for rent, utilities, food, clothing, etc.) And the means of support cannot be welfare. Then, the courts then decide rather to grant or deny your petition.

Hope that helps!
