You get better at it with experience. But usually you can take even a brief time. … even if it is only a minute or two, you can get your thoughts together. Be sincere and don’t try to pretend. It won’t hurt to say: “I hardly know what to say.” or something like that. It is a compliment that someone thinks you can speak without forewarning, so take it that way and go for it.
