What did immigrants do during the California Gold Rush?

I know they mined and all, but what did they do besides that? Like, what race started what? What did the chinese do and what did the mexicans do? Like, did they start their own businesses or movie theaters or something? Did they start their own banks? And how did immigration affect the economy and government? How did it change california in general? You dont have to answer all my questions, id appreciate just one….

Answer #1

i have an ancestor who was an immigrant during the gold rush. he did some mining but he also became a gunsmith (had his own store), a fur trader, and a few other things too. when he wasn’t in california looking for gold he was busy buying land for his family.

one way it changed california is that despite not many people not being lucky enough to find gold a lot of them still stayed and lived in california. so the population grew

many of the Mexicans were experienced miners

the chinese came and labored in agriculture, mining, and wherever workers were needed
