Centuries ago women got their first period around 17. Throughout the 20th century the average age of menarche has been declining. By 1920 it was 14.6, by 1980 it declined to 13.1 and today it’s 12.5.

Nobody really knows why girls are becoming sexually mature earlier than they used to. Some researchers believe it is our rich diet; some think the breakdown of the family unit and the stress of modern life have accelerated it. Some theorize that environmental chemicals that mimic estrogen are the cause.

Currently delayed puberty is not considered a medical concern unless it has still not begun by 16. At this point it should be determined if puberty is just late or if there are underlying problems.
