If I upgrade the ram on my vaio PC from 756 megs to 1.5 gigs, will

The vaio computer I use is a bit older, and has been acting rather slow lately. I’m wondering if I should upgrade the ram to improve perfromance, as it only has around 756 megs of ram, however, since it’s around three years old, and has an AMD 1.36 GHZ processor, I can’t help but think that perhaps more ram isnt’ the answer.

If I add another gig dimm, and replace the 256 meg dimm, then would that improve speed & response time enough to make it worth my while, or should I wait till my budget allows me to do a full blown upgrade of the PC? thanks.

Replacing the three 256 meg dimm with a 1 gig dimm will improve the pc’s performance. This is due to the fact that the system board will only have to read and write data to one chip as opposed to three different ones. This will improve the speed at which the cpu will be able to process resources and temporary files that are stored on the ram.

You may also want to consider running anti-spyware software in your machine like spybot or adware. Spyware (which is software that installs itself into your machine without your knowledge through internet surfing or through some software installation) will cause your machine to slow down and act unstable causing applications to randomly hang or crash. Visit www.download.com, search for spybot or adware and download then install the anti-spyware software.
