Who can identify this snake?

Some friends saw it while camping, but it’s unusually large for this part of Northern Ontario. My first thought is that it’s a King Snake, but I’m not really knowledgeable about reptiles. Any ideas?

Answer #3

It seems too big to be a Northern Brown - those grow up to about 13 inches, this snake is at least 1 meter in length.

Answer #4

gagh! I am actually gonna have to look it up!

Answer #5

It could be a lake Erie Water snake, or an Eastern Hog nose. Both are non-venomous.

Answer #6

Hmm…what would either of those be doing up in northern Canada?

Answer #7

I did some research, and based off of the picture and the types of snakes we have here in Ontario, it looks a lot like a ‘Northern Water Snake’. I’ll attach a photo of one I found that looks similar to the one you have, but here is a source of the snakes we have:

And here’s the article at which I got the photo from, which explains some about the snake: http://funadvice.com/r/3kfpamoic1

Answer #8

It looks similar, but it was much bigger than that…unless those can grow to be a meter in length.

Answer #9

They can grow up to 4.4 feet long, which is just slightly over a meter.
