I want to be a therapist.

hi! I am a freshman in high school and I pretty much know what I want to be, a therapist. I know I’m really young to be thinking about this, but I like to plan things out. I am a smart kid…I have gotten straight As all year at a top private school. I love helping people and I think I want to be a therapist. what are some good schools? how many years would I be in school (I don’t know how far I want to go as in like md, phd etc.) minimum? any information would be great. thanks so much :)

I’ve answered this question several times, I wish I could find the answers.

You need to get your bachelors first. As for good schools for that, just search for good undergraduate schools. No, it does not matter which one it is… Obviously ivy league always looks good… 4 years…

After that, you decide what you want to do, there’s several paths Counseling - masters in mental health or family counseling (2 years) + several thousand hours of experience to get licensed Psychology - phd in clinical or counseling psychology or psyd (5 years) + 1 year internship Psychiatry - get your medical degree, then specialize in psychiatry (8 years including residency)

Since there are many many years for you to figure out what you want to do, I cannot possibly be bothered to go into details. It doesnt matter anyways, because you’re only going to figure out what you enjoy once you actually start undergrad and take a few psychology classes and do some research. That should help you decide which path to take. Some are more research oriented, some follow the medical model more, and that is kinda hard to explain without you experiencing it first hand.

before you start making major life decisions try taking a couple physcology classes to make sure thats what you want to do
