Can my mom stop me from getting psychiatric help?

But my mom doesnt think so… I have medicade, and they cover 20 visits a year. I have only gone 2 times, tomorrow is my 3rd…

my mom isnt going to let me go… she thinks it is stupid and a waste of time.

I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, and major depression.

and my mom says there is nothing wrong with it… she says I never complain. because I cant. if there is anything I’ve learned in my house, its complaining gets you no where.. you just get yelled at…

normal people dont think about death every waking hour. normal people dont fail classes because they stare at a wall worrying about death. normal people dont contemplate suicide (yes that is very contradicting seen as how it is death I worry about) but I do.

and she wants me to stop me from seeing the psychiatrist, she isnt paying for it…

does she really have a say in this? can she tell me I cant get help when it is covered by insurance and I believe I need it?

Answer #1

Your mom should stick by you and try to help you through this.. I went through a bad severe experience in 2006. depends on how old you are .. but your mom should take you .. good luck

Answer #2

This is serious. I would first go to the school counselor just as rockytina is advising. I would also call a teen hot line as well. It sounds like you are not the only one that may need help here so I would go all the way. You have already taken the first step, all you need to do is follow through with an adult, most likely from your school. Hang in there, follow thru ASAP!

Answer #3

If a psychiatrist diagnoses you with something and prescribes you medication, and your parents take you off that medication / stop taking you to your appointments, and the appointments are necessary (as in, it’s obvious you need the help) your parents can get in trouble because it may be viewed as being neglectful or even being emotionally abusive..and in this day and age, child services being called isn’t all too common. You should consult your school guidance counselor, which is a good place to start.

Answer #4

Unfortunately a therapist will not see you without parental approval (I mean there are exceptions in some states, but it gets tricky). But mental health is part of health… something she cant legally deny you unless she wants to get in trouble with the department of children and family services. Talk to her, ask her to talk to the psychiatrist…

Answer #5

I dont want to say she is a bad mom… but… its not fair for her to say I cant receive treatment when I think I need it.

Answer #6

go behind her back…I have had anxiety problems since I was 21 , I am now 33. still have it. my twenties were hell with anxiety. how old are u?

Teen hotlines:

Simply a Rose to brighten your day,         And maybe lessen the cares in your way;         And also, too, to help you to know,         That in knowing you, many others grow!

Answer #8

I would talk to the school counselor and have him or her call my mother, if I were you. Tell your mom that you think about suicide and it is serious. Tell that also to your counselor, so that the counselor knows and tells your mom as well.

You need to get outside adult support, or have someone else you know well to drive you. Ideally an adult that you trust, not some random person.

First, I would talk to the counselor or a teacher you trust not to tell anyone.
