Sarah, such a great question. So many folks are confused about the hymen and what being “A VIRGIN” means.

The hymen is generally made up of two parts. The thin tissue blocking or partially blocking the entrance to the vagina and the thin “ring of tissue” surrounding the first part.

The thin tissue of the first part can be broken or torn as you described, by a fall or horseback riding or some other trama to the vagina.

The second part, or the ring, can only be broken, torn or stretched by penetration of the vagina by something usually bigger than a finger.

The debate rages on, but I think that in todays age, a woman is considered a virgin until her vagina has been penetrated by something larger than a finger.

Although it begs for debate, I like to use the following definition:

“From a psycological as well as a physical perspective, a heterosexual woman remains a virgin until she has been penetrated by a man’s penis.”

Of course, the romantic in me believes “Virginity is not something that can be taken from someone, it must be given.”
