How to begin babysitting at 25??

I’m 25 years old, and I’d like to make a little extra cash babysitting.

When I was “normal babysitting age” I was never really interested in kids, so I never actually got a chance to learn the ins and outs of taking care of them. My other sisters were into it, and I had absolutely no interest. However today, I love babies and kids; it’s like a switch flipped when I turned 20… funny how that works.

The family living on the floor above me has 2 kids: a girl, probably 2 years old and a boy, not even one year old. I’ve only lived there for 10 months now, and have only seen the family in passing a couple times; I’ve never really had the chance to talk to them. We haven’t even introduced ourselves.

How do I first of all, ask them if I can babysit? I know nothing about occupying, feeding, changing diapers, looking after a circumcision, giving baths, and on and on and on… how can I expect her to hire me not knowing any of the basics of babysitting?

@dondiva25:

I’m a student, and the idea of babysitting for that family just popped into my head more out of convenience; as it’s a short walk to get to “work” with them living right above me. I just thought it would be an easy way to get a little extra cash. My plan was just to babysit the for the family upstairs in their home, not mine. Well I guess it could be mine too if they packed a bag for their kids and food and all that stuff.

My question was how do I ask them if I can babysit given the awkwardness of never having talked to the parents previously; and how can I get them to hire me given that I don’t know any of the basics of babysitting, for example, like I said, occupying kids/babies, feeding, changing diapers, taking care of a circumcision, giving baths, etc and I have heard it is fairly difficult.

Basically, how do I approach this subject with them?

Print some flyers and make sure your price is reasonable. Also read the babysitting laws for where you are from. Like I live in DC and if you watch over six kids you need a license. Also come up with a plan like are you going to feed the kids or does the parents provide their food. make sure once you start you get all info from parents about their kids like allergies and so on. I hope I helped
