How the fun did the term "joshing" spring up?

So when someone says “are you joshing me” what the fun? How did joshing originate? Is kinda like say I trip going up the stairs and a friend saw it and everytime after that she saw someone trip up the stairs she would say haha thas a jeremy. Anyone think it came around something like that? Did I make any sense? Lol

It is actually a very old word. In movies set in the 1800’s they will use ‘joshing’. I believe it was first used in Europe, though that is all I really know. It is just something like ‘lol’ and ‘buttmunch.’ Or at least I say buttmunch all of the time.
