How many bytes are in a megabyte?

I always forget. Isn’t it 1000 bytes in a megabyte? There are 100 bytes in a kilobyte, right? I don’t know why I can never remember this simple piece of information. How about a gigabyte?

Answer #1

A gigabyte (derived from the SI prefix giga-) is a unit of information or computer storage equal to one billion (short scale, meaning a thousand million) bytes. It is commonly abbreviated GB (not to be confused with Gb, which is used for gigabits).

Answer #2

There are 1024 bytes in a kilobyte and 1024 kilobytes in 1 megabyte. Therefore there are 1024 x 1024 bytes in one megabyte: 1,048,576 bytes in one megabyte.

Answer #3

1048576
