How long does tinnitus last?

Ok this last Saturday (7-19-08) I went shooting w/ some family members & ever since the first shot I’ve had tinnitus (ringing sound in the ears, I wasn’t wearing any ear protection either). I up to that point had never shot a weapon multiple times nor had tinnitus this long, approx. 36 hours now. I did some research & according to many sites, tinnitus can last from a few days to a few weeks to even the rest of your life! Has anybody ever shot a weapon or had tinnitus for a long period of time & can you tell me what treatment you had or how long it took to subside?

I had tinnitus a few months ago. I didn’t do anything to treat it, I thought I was going to go deaf or something, but I just let it go and eventually it subsided. It lasted for a week and a half. So it could take a while.

I’ve had it for about 4 days non stop after a few days band practicing without protection. I think it was about 3 days where I had little protection, certainly the third day I wasnt wearing any, and neither the second. its really scary thinking your gonna live with it forever, but my dads a doctor and says douzens of people come each day and say they have tinitus and after an average of about 2 weeks its gone. He also said the tinitus subsides in tune with the ammount you think about it. good luck buddy!

I have had it on and off for years. Usually it only lasts for a few minutes, first a change in pressure in my ear (I get it in both ears not at the same times though), then a steady tone for anywhere from a minute to several minutes straight, then it subsides. Today I got it in my right ear and it lasted almost an hour straight. It freaks me out because I’m a professional singer/musician (probably why I have the problems I have w/my hearing), and I need my hearing for my career, so it is scary. And it causes some sleeplessness too.
