How long does it take for my g1 to upgrade to an hd 2?

I have a t mobile g1 , my mom bought me an hd 2, which just came out in the usa today. When I go to the upgrade page it says upgrade in progress, how long will the upgrade take? & when it takes place if I do not have the phone(birthday surprise) will my g1 not work?

According to t-mobile support: “Upgrading takes about 20-30 minutes if you are using a USB, but it’ll take longer if you’re not. During this time, don’t do anything else with your PC (such as start another application like Microsoft Word or Excel) because your phone could crash. Also, try not to let the screen saver or power save mode kick in, as this could affect your upgrade too.”
