How does Limewire sue you?

I heard that if you use Limewire (or Frostwire) You can get sued or something for a lot of money? Because its illegal or something?

Is this right? What would make some people get sued and some people not get sued?

The software wouldn’t sue you, the rights holder(s) to any material you downloaded may sue you, after they subpoena your IP address, etc, from the ISP that you use to connect through limewire.

From what I can see, the people who have been sued fall into two broad categories: Those who make good poster children for the anti piracy firms, can’t afford legal defense, etc. Those who downloaded tons of material, as they’re easier to catch infringing than those who only downloaded one or two files.
