How do you stop a dog's ear infection?

My dog is constantly getting ear infections that produce gobs of a black sludge like substance. Every time I take him to the vet it cost $100. Any suggestions on how to prevent the infections or a home remedy?

A Colloidal Silver product such as Silver Biotics made by American Biotec Labs may help with the infections. I had purchased some at the GNC store but I know that you can also order it online from various places. Many people use it for children’s ear infections and seem to get great results. I actually use ear wipes on my dog constantly and that seems to help. If you are Really careful you can use Qtips to clean the gunk or use an infant bulb to get some of the nastiness out.
